vision statement
All Art students will be knowledgeable in the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. All Art students will experiment with art materials to learn artistic self-expression and creative problem solving. The Art Room will be a safe environment for creative risk-taking. Students will encourage each other to try their best and improve artistic skills and creative problem solving throughout their lives. Students, teachers and parents will acknowledge that ART is a PROCESS—taking an idea and/or an emotion, and developing it into a physical, visual, artistic representation of that original idea and/or emotion. The process includes conceptualizing, planning, experimenting, implementing, correcting, and reflecting on the product and the process itself.

Mrs. Kooyman will provide clear instructions, opportunities to use new materials and techniques, positive and honest feedback, and time to reflect on the quality of work. Mrs. Kooyman will recognize students for their outstanding efforts and creative risks.

Grading policy
The middle school art curriculum provides the students with a rich range of experiences. These include crafts, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The goal of the course is not to teach students to be artists, but rather to provide them with a variety of visual arts experiences.
Attendance
Attendance is taken daily. Students who are absent are responsible for following up with the teacher to develop a plan for making up work in a timely manner. Students may work in the art room during lunch to make up work or to meet due dates. Standard HCPSS policies apply in regard to submitting work as a result of absence.
Participation
Student participation is important for the success of each lesson. Student engagement in class discussions and activities contributes to the overall learning environment of the class. Although students who do not participate in discussions will not be penalized, those that do participate in a positive way on a regular basis may have borderline grades adjusted in response to their contributions to the class. Students are expected to participate in artistic activities to improve creative problem-solving techniques and develop artistic skills.
Clean-Up
Satisfactory cleanup is expected from all students. Keeping the art room clean and organized is a group effort. Responsible behavior during clean-up ensures an efficient and thorough clean-up. Students who are not responsible during clean-up may lose the opportunity to participate in future activities and lessons.
Drills/Idea Generators
Drills/Idea Generators are completed each day at the beginning of each lesson. Drill answers are reviewed each day together as a class to ensure that all students have the opportunity to learn the material and record the correct answers. Drills are to be completed in a very specific format as instructed by the teacher and are collected regularly.
Class Work
Class work accounts for the largest portion of the overall grade. Each unit will include a variety of experiences to promote skill development and craftsmanship, creative problem solving skills, and critical thinking skills. Students will reflect and respond to various art and artifacts created by master artists, folk artists, and cultural exemplars. Students will apply their skills to create personal meaning to their work utilizing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
Art process is valued. While Art is project/product-based, the overall aesthetic of a final project is not the sole determiner of grades. Each project’s rubric will include a variety of expectations with the focus on artistic process and problem-solving.
Students are free to improve their grade based upon feedback from the teacher. Late artwork will be penalized at 5% per day. Late or missing work will be identified by a “0” until submitted.
Grading
Daily Work Ethic grade (up to 5 points daily): this includes participation, skill development, organization of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design into meaningful artistic creations, and artistic reflection. Class Projects: students will receive grades (up to 5 points per category) in Content, Craftsmanship and Creativity.
